BATTLEFIELD SURVEY Potential Site for New Leisure Centre to be checked .
A Time Team type survey using modern hi tech equipment that can detect metal and masonry underground is to be carried out in the Borough Council grounds.
If anything significant is found exploratory trenches will dug, using more conventional archaeology.
The survey is being carried out as a part of an investigation by consultants to find a site for a proposed new leisure centre.
The council wants to see Cascades demolished to make way for the re-development of Spring Gardens, but has agreed that a new centre will be built before it is closed.
Consultants are being employed to check out the three proposed sites: the former MOD depot at the rear of Safeway, the grounds of Tewkesbury School and the Council offices.
They have been briefed to select one and give a justified reason for their choice.
Cascades was built by local donations and under the terms of the trust that runs it, the people of Tewkesbury should have the final say in its future.
